The "Center of Legal Competence (CLC) - Verein zur Förderung der rechtlichen Ostkompetenz Österreichs" (CLC Association) was founded at the beginning of 1999 by the Republic of Austria on the initiative of the Federal Ministry of Justice, together with the Austrian Bar, the Austrian Chamber of Notaries and the Austrian Chamber of Chartered Accountants and Tax Advisors, the Austrian Economic Chamber and the Federation of Austrian Industries.
The CLC Association was assigned the task of actively promoting and co-shaping the legal reform and transformation process in the economic area of Central and Eastern Europe, of sustainably contributing to evaluating and harmonising the legal systems and judicial systems of Central and Eastern Europe, above all with the legal and institutional standards of the European Union, and of contributing to developing and strengthening legal structures and institutions in transition countries of Central and Eastern Europe, especially in the in the area of the justice systems.
In 2008 the CLC Association was renamed “Center of Legal Competence (CLC) - Beratungs- und Forschungszentrum zur Förderung der Kompetenz auswärtiger Institutionen” (consulting and research centre for the promotion of competence of foreign institutions).
After nearly 13 years of operational activities the mission of the CLC Association was completed as a result of the accession of the Central and Eastern European countries to the European Union.
In 2011 the CLC Association was dissolved on a voluntary basis and duly wound up.
